A Few Words on Panning
Purpose
Panning is to show movement of a subject by blurring the background while having the subject in greater relative focus. The blur caused by panning is called motion blur and is created by the photographer moving the camera in synchronization (same speed and direction) with the subjects movement. It works best when the subject is moving perpendicular to the plane of the camera's shutter.
End Result
The subject's core will be in focus while the background (and area's of the subject moving in directions different from the pan) will be blurry.
